CHAPTER 17
The air was frigid but Liamâs new coat helped make it more bearable. The streets were quiet except for the crunch of the shallow, loose snow under their boots. In this serene moment, Liam found himself lost, thinking about the roller coaster ride heâd been on.
In the short time heâd known Loralei, their lives had been a non-stop adventure. It was a dramatic change from the routine he was used to. A subtle smile crossed his lips as he thought about the absurdity of it all. On the one hand, he was grateful to break free of his endless repetitive cycle of self-destructive behavior heâd engaged in over the past decade. On the other, this recess from normality ushered in a new series of events which were arguably more hazardous to his health.
But just as soon as his smile appeared, it was gone. A pit formed in his stomach as he remembered why he had a routineâflashbacks of Arrowhead Killer crime scenes erupted from his subconscious and flooded his thoughts. The names of the victims echoed through the void of grey matter.
He took a deep breath of the crisp air and buried the memories as quickly as he could then looked to Loralei, desperate for her to provide a distraction but she appeared to be lost in her own thoughts. Her nose and cheeks were rosy and a wisp of hair fell from the hood of her mantelet and covered part of her face.
He cleared his throat. âSo, what made you want to become a historian?â
The question broke Loralei out of her empty daze at the ground ahead of her. âHuh?â
âI was just asking why you decided to become a historian.â
She smirked, but didnât see the tension in his face as he asked the question. âOh, itâs a silly story and not really that interesting.â
He took in another deep breath and slowly let it out as he looked at the long stretch of snow ahead of them. He knew only two things would quell his inner monologue, small talk or whiskey. And he didnât have any whiskey. âCâmon, weâve got a long walk ahead of us. If Iâve learned one thing in all my years of being a detective, itâs that just because you donât find a piece of information interesting, it doesnât mean I wonât.â
She let out a shallow laugh. âI donât know.â
âItâs a long road ahead; what do you have to lose?â
âAll right, well â¦â she started to answer but stopped and dropped her face in her hands and laughed. âPlease, I donât want you to make fun of me.â
âOkay, you donât have to answer. But I wonât stop asking until you do.â
They shared a flirtatious glance. âFine. But if you so much as smirk I will throw you in the snow so fast you wonât even know what happened, do you understand?â
âYeah, sure, I promise,â Liam crossed his heart with his fingers.
She said nothing for a moment as she recollected the story in her head. âI was fifteen, maybe sixteen.
